Complete a self-review and manager review

โ—Ž PerformanceUpdated 2026-07-15

Once a review cycle opens, employees complete a self-review and managers follow with their own assessment of the same period. Together these form the basis for the final rating.

Employee โ€” self-review

  1. Open Performance and go to the active cycle assigned to you.
  2. Review your goals for the period and add a closing update on how each went.
  3. Fill in the self-assessment questions โ€” these typically ask you to reflect on your key achievements, challenges, and areas you'd like to grow in.
  4. Submit your self-review before the stage deadline. Once submitted, it's usually locked from further edits and becomes visible to your manager.

Be specific โ€” reference actual outcomes and numbers where you can rather than general statements. This makes the manager review (and any calibration afterward) more accurate.

Manager โ€” reviewing a direct report

  1. Once an employee's self-review is submitted, it appears in your team's pending reviews.
  2. Read their self-assessment and goal updates, then complete your own manager assessment โ€” your view of their performance against the same goals and expectations.
  3. Add specific, constructive feedback. If your cycle includes ratings, select the appropriate rating for each component.
  4. Submit the manager review. Depending on your organization's process, this may go to calibration before it's shared with the employee.

Sharing the outcome

Many organizations hold a one-on-one conversation to walk through the final review with the employee before or alongside it being formally shared in the system. Check your organization's process โ€” some cycles release the review automatically once finalized, others wait for HR to release it after calibration.

Common issues

  • Can't submit self-review โ€” check all required fields are filled in; a missing response on a mandatory question will block submission.
  • Manager review not appearing โ€” the employee's self-review may not be submitted yet, or the stage hasn't opened for managers.
  • Rating looks different from what the manager entered โ€” if your cycle includes calibration, ratings can be adjusted afterward; see calibration for how that works.

When to contact support

If a submitted review isn't visible to the next stage's participant, raise a ticket with the employee name and the review cycle.
