Estimate only, slabs as of July 2026. Professional tax is a state subject — slabs, gender rules and payment frequency differ by state, and the maximum any state can charge is ₹2,500 per person per year. Half-yearly states (Tamil Nadu, Kerala) assess PT on half-yearly income; the figure shown is a monthly equivalent for comparison. See our state-wise professional tax guides for slabs, due dates and registration, and verify against the official state portal before filing.

How it works

How professional tax is calculated

Professional Tax (PT) is a tax on income from employment, trades and professions, levied by individual states and union territories under Article 276 of the Constitution — which caps it at ₹2,500 per person per year. Because it is a state subject, both the slabs and the mechanics vary: most states (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Gujarat and others) deduct PT monthly from salary, while Tamil Nadu and Kerala assess and collect it half-yearly through local bodies. A few states apply special rules — Maharashtra, for instance, exempts women earning up to ₹25,000 a month and collects an extra ₹300 in February so the annual total reaches ₹2,500. Employers are responsible for registering (obtaining an Enrolment Certificate and Registration Certificate), deducting the correct amount each cycle, and depositing it with the state. This calculator applies the current monthly slab for the state you choose; for the full slab tables, due dates and registration steps, see the state-wise guides linked above.

FAQ

Professional tax questions, answered

What is the maximum professional tax in India?
The maximum professional tax any state can levy is ₹2,500 per person per year, a ceiling set under Article 276 of the Constitution. The actual amount and slabs differ by state.
Which states do not levy professional tax?
Several states and UTs — including Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and others — do not levy professional tax at all. This calculator covers the major states that do; check your state’s rule if it isn’t listed.
Is professional tax deducted monthly?
In most states, yes — the employer deducts PT from monthly salary. Tamil Nadu and Kerala are half-yearly: PT is assessed on half-yearly income and paid twice a year through the local body.
Who pays professional tax — employee or employer?
It is deducted from the employee’s salary, but the employer is responsible for registering, deducting and depositing it with the state. Kredily computes the right state PT for every employee automatically and keeps it ready to file.
Is there a professional tax exemption for women in Maharashtra?
Yes. In Maharashtra, women earning up to ₹25,000 a month pay no professional tax. The calculator applies this exemption automatically when you select Maharashtra and mark the employee as female.
