UAN (Universal Account Number)
The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a unique 12-digit identifier assigned by the EPFO to every EPF member, which remains constant throughout their career regardless of how many employers they work for. Each employer allots a separate Member ID under the same UAN, allowing all provident fund accounts to be linked and tracked in one place.
UAN enables employees to view their consolidated PF passbook online, transfer or withdraw funds, update KYC details, and download Form 19/10C/31 without employer intervention for most actions. It is activated via the EPFO member portal using the UAN and a one-time password sent to the registered mobile number.
Key points
- ✓ A single 12-digit UAN stays with the employee across all employers for life
- ✓ Each employer assigns a separate Member ID linked under the same UAN
- ✓ Enables self-service EPF passbook viewing, KYC updates, and online withdrawal
- ✓ Must be seeded with Aadhaar, PAN, and bank details for smooth claim processing
- ✓ New employers must link the employee's existing UAN rather than issue a new one
Example
An employee who worked at Company A and then moved to Company B will have the same UAN throughout, but two different Member IDs, one for each employer's PF contributions, both visible together in the consolidated EPF passbook.
